Home Modifications/SHIP

The Ability1st Home Modification Program, in conjunction with the State Housing Initiative Partnership Program (SHIP), provides home improvements necessary to eliminate health, safety, and architectural barriers from the home.

When a person finds themselves having to use a wheelchair or walker, adapting their home to accommodate it often requires skilled expertise and substantial expense. Improvements may include installing handrails and grab bars, construction of a custom wheelchair ramp, widening doorways, and replacing a bathtub with a walk-in shower.

Each year, we complete approximately 12-15 major home modification projects in our community to improve the safety and comfort of one of our low-income neighbors living with a disability. Often, the modifications provided enable that neighbor to remain living independently in their own home rather than move to a more expensive and restrictive setting.
