The Arvah B. Hopkins Power Plant Visit

Students visited The Arvah B. Hopkins Power Plant and met with engineers and staff to learn about the technology involved in operating a power plant. Students learned about the interworkings of the power plant turbines and the operating room. The Arvah B. Hopkins Power Plant burns fossil fuels (either natural gas or oil) to convert water to steam in two huge boilers. The steam is used to drive two turbines, which are in turn connected, to power generators.

Students put on safety glasses, hard hats and earplugs and experienced a fantastic tour! Students learned that chemists in the plant's laboratory perform more than 40 tests on water every day, including tests for metal contaminants, mineral precipitates and acidity. They also learned that the operators monitor the operation of the boilers turbines and generators 24 hours a day, 365 days a year!

Thanks to The City of Tallahassee and everyone at The Arvah B. Hopkins Power Plant!
