2004 Highlights of the Spring Break Experience
HS/HT had the opportunity to host Brevard and Taylor County HS/HT students for a “spring break tour.” Visiting students spent several days in Tallahassee enjoying the sights and learning of educational opportunities. Students toured the Florida State University Campus, WFSU Broadcast Center and the National High Field Magnetic Laboratory. HS/HT students also met with FSU students with disabilities and had a panel discussion to talk about life on campus. The director of the Student Disability Resource Center also met with students and discussed services and accommodations available to students at FSU.
Students also enjoyed a guided tour of the Capitol. To cap off an already exciting adventure, students were recognized on the Senate Floor by the Florida State Senate! Ability 1st staff provided an Advocacy / Leadership training, where students had the opportunity to lean from professionals who were also individuals with disabilities. Staff facilitated a discussion about accommodations and advocacy. Staff also opened the dialogue to include a discussion about the emotions connected to having a disability and how to deal with a disability in the workforce. Students received information on IDEA legislation and disability rights laws. After the presentation, students participated in several hands on activities, which simulated other types of disabilities.
Although the educational elements of the “Spring Break Experience” were extensive, students also had a blast at their SPRING BREAK SOCIAL! The Tallahassee HS/HT Student Board planned all of the evening events including food, decorations and activities. Florida State University Football Quarterback, Chris Rix joined the HS/HT students for a fun filled evening!
